New Zealanders - or 'Kiwis' - represent a surprising melting pot of nationalities and cultures and are broadly categorised as either Maori or Pakeha. Maori are the indigenous people while Pakeha is a term originally used by Maori to describe outsiders but which in modern usage tends more to refer to a white skinned person with other nationalities referred to according to origin as Asian, European or Pacific Islander, etc.
The native Maori people are of Polynesian origin, whose arrival is still the subject of much debate. Evidence suggests they may have visited as far back as 2000 years ago, though nothing points to a specific start of continual residence. One thing that is sure is that New Zealand was one of the last major land masses to be inhabited on earth, leaving us with much fascinating flora and fauna which remains wonderfully unmodified by human influence. Maori history is the subject of richly woven myths and legends as their language was only spoken until the first decades of the 1800's when a written form was developed by early Pakeha settlers. Once in written form, the various legends were further 'averaged' to arrive at the popular story telling of an initial mystical migration arriving aboard a Great Fleet of six ancestral canoes about the year 1300. Maori who are interested in their cultural heritage, and there are many who are, can trace their tribal origins back to one of these canoes and further still to Hawaiki, the traditional homeland of all Polynesian peoples. Any visit to our shores is enhanced by the opportunities which Maori proudly provide to learn about this past and their unique tapestry of explanations for every facet of nature's blessing of their land.
Captain James Cook wasn't the first European to sight the land Maori called Aotearoa, but his favourable reports after HMS Endeavour's famous voyage of 1769 heralded a new era. Pakeha settlers first arrived in the last light of the 1700's as opportunist traders and were followed by missionaries in the early 1800's. New Zealand's national day on the sixth of February celebrates the 1840 signing of a treaty between the 1000 or so settlers and chiefs representing as many as 100 000 Maori. Organised settlement quickly followed with packages of land and passage marketed in London. By 1900 the 'new' socially progressive nation was already a mix of Germans, French, Scots, Irish, Scandinavians, Dalmatians, Lebanese and Jews. Population reached one million by the time of World War One and two million during the 1950's when a new wave of encouraged immigrants arrived from Britain, Holland, Hungary and Poland. Pacific Islanders, who today comprise one of the most significant groups of migrants, began arriving in the 1960's and now represent 6% of the population. Auckland, where some areas can boast almost 50% of inhabitants as originating from the Pacific, is widely regarded as the largest Polynesian city in the world. By 1973 there were three million Kiwis and early in 2003 we reached a population of four million after immigration policies designed to attract investment during the 1990's appealed to Chinese, Koreans and South Africans. Today, as the country's population approaches 4.5 million, 20% of residents were born beyond our own shores - though this varies widely from 30% in urban centres like Auckland to 6% in the rural heartlands.
New Zealanders possess a quietly reserved sense of patriotism for a nationality which has provided pioneers in many fields. It was a Kiwi who was first to split the atom and Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Mt Everest in 1953 similarly stirred the imagination of the world. Initiatives such as retirement pensions and the right for women to vote also claim New Zealand as their birthplace. In battle both Maori and Pakeha have won Britain's highest gallantry awards - with one even becoming the only combat soldier to ever win the Victoria Cross twice. Most Kiwis know they live in one of the most fortunate countries on the planet and that they are considered friendly by outsiders. By international standards New Zealanders are fit, healthy, well educated and independent. Levels of smoking and alcohol consumption are relatively low and over three quarters of school children are involved in organised sport. More than 60% of adults continue to participate in regular physical activity, producing many world champions. Of the 87 Olympic medals that hang in New Zealand homes, almost half are gold. Literacy runs at 99%, while 30% of adults have qualifications gained since leaving school and more than 80% of the population have access to the internet. About 20% of the workforce are self employed and, even during the current global recession, less than 7% are unemployed. 68% of people own the home they live in, the highest rate in the world.
Kiwis are not deeply religious people with the three main religions of Anglican, Presbyterian, and Catholic holding a declining 50% of the population's faith. The Maori people were enthusiastic converts to Christianity and its peaceful ways by the early missionaries and their own religion is represented by a rich mythology. Numerous other religions enjoy strong followings among the Polynesian, Chinese, Indian and other communities.
Although 85% urbanised these days, even our largest metropolitan centre can only claim a little over a million inhabitants. Many people choose to live in smaller towns where individuals make important contributions to the community. Most Kiwis have time to stop and talk and pass on that natural smile which may well be a product of Polynesian influence. You can be sure of meeting one or two on a leisurely tour of our back-roads!

While planning my trip to New Zealand over a year ago, I began reading various reviews for camper van companies on the web. I quickly discovered numerous favorable reviews from New Zealand Frontiers and decided this was going to be the company I'll choose for my adventure! I was met at the airport by Kenrick of New Zealand Frontiers and was immediately impressed. Such a nice person. Kenrick thoroughly went over the camper van with me and answered all of my questions. Kenrick was very nice and we spoke over a fresh cup of coffee he had made me. After my three week adventure on both islands, I returned the camper van and Kenrick gave me a ride back to the airport. During my trip, Kenrick emailed me with helpful information about road openings/closures, and wished me well on my trip! I cannot say enough in words of how much I appreciate Kenrick and his assistance before, during, and after my vacation in New Zealand. New Zealand Frontiers was the most positive experience I have ever had with travel arrangements in foreign lands and I would (and probably will) use them again in the future. I have met a new friend in New Zealand! HIGHLY recommended!
Juliette Woodman, U.K., January-March 2019
I used a New Zealand Frontiers van for the third time this Jan/Feb and found it clean comfortable and it ran very smoothly all around the route. The kind friendly advice available at anytime was also a valuable asset during another epic voyage around this beautiful country. Juliet

It was the best holiday EVER!! Not only because it's the most wonderful country to travel in for its beauty and wonder... it wouldn't have been as carefree had it not been for the amazing customer service provided by Kenrick. From the very first correspondence to dropping off our home on wheels, we felt genuinely cared for. He took the time to explain all the workings and cubby holes in the van, and as campervan virgins, this could not have been more appreciated! As business owners ourselves, Kenrick's excellent sense of humour and hands-on welcome was beyond refreshing! I would and have recommended this awesome company to anyone looking to rent a well-cared for and equipped camper van. Easy to drive and maneuver on the roads of New Zealand. Have run out of adjectives to describe the best holiday EVER!! Cheers!!
We rented a campervan from New Zealand Frontiers for two weeks in early December and had an excellent experience driving from Queenstown to Auckland. Much of that experience would not have been possible without Kenrick, his attention to detail and his excellent service. He met us at Queenstown airport and as this was our very first campervan experience, he very patiently went through every aspect of a campervan holiday: the equipment available on board, effluent disposal, the rules of freedom camping and the rules of the road. As we didn't usually drive on manual transmission on vehicles this large, he accompanied us as we took a short drive around Queenstown to ensure that we were alright driving the van. Our ferry booking from Picton to Wellington was also handled by Kenrick and when we needed to bring forward the ferry booking or when we needed advice on the campervan, he was only a phone call away and answers promptly. The van was clean, well-maintained and well-equipped with all that we needed for our trip: all the necessary utensils, a stove, refrigerator, microwave, TV/DVD player (and 3 DVDs) and a GPS with great commentaries. There was one day on which we experienced problems with the indicators on the dashboard. Kenrick was just a phone call away and monitored the situation and based on the symptoms, assured us that the indicators were false positives. As it turned out, he was right; the problem did not occur again for the rest of the trip and we arrived safely at all our intended locations. What we appreciated was that New Zealand Frontiers' quotation had no hidden costs and that terms and conditions of the rental was spelt out very clearly in the contract, which Kenrick went through in sufficient detail with us at the beginning of our trip. Kenrick has a wealth of experience in what he does and this was very reassuring to us. We enjoyed our campervan experience thoroughly and would like to commend Kenrick on the great work done.
"From beginning to end, my experience with New Zealand Frontiers was absolutely first class."
My girlfriend and I had an amazing 10 day holiday on the North Island with New Zealand Frontiers. Kenrick handed over a very clean, well kept camper and we dropped it off in Wellington. Kenrick gave us great advice for our trip and I would recommend his company to anyone going on holiday in NZ. Had a fantastic time!
"We met another New Zealand Frontiers customer during our travels and their experience matched ours - a professional and reliable service."
Liam and Katherine Spence, U.K., May-June 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We hired a campervan through New Zealand Frontiers for our honeymoon in New Zealand. We picked it up in Auckland and dropped it off in Queenstown. Hiring a campervan is definitely the best way to see this amazing country. The owner Kenrick was a real star - provided a fantastic campervan that exceeded our expectations, provided plenty of information and guidebooks, was promptly available for any questions and even threw in a bottle of wine to help us celebrate our honeymoon. We met another New Zealand Frontiers customer during our travels and their experience matched ours - a professional and reliable service. We would recommend anyone looking to hire a campervan in NZ to use Kenrick's services.
Note: Liam and Kat maintained an impressive travel blog of their New Zealand road trip and invite all to browse.
"Our experience with this small company was very much more satisfying than that we have had with the larger companies we have used on several previous holidays in New Zealand."
David and Marlene Bevan, Australia, April-May 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We would thoroughly recommend hiring a camper van from New Zealand Frontiers. The van was well presented and very well equipped. There was also a travel book, a book of maps and camping pamphlets - rather more information than was ever included with other camper vans that we have hired over the years. It was pleasing that we could drive on whichever roads we wished. Kenrick Mitchell, the proprietor could not have been more helpful. Our experience with this small company was very much more satisfying than that we have had with the larger companies we have used on several previous holidays in New Zealand.
Mike and Carolyn Edwards, South Africa, March-April 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
My wife and I hired a two sleeper from New Zealand Frontiers for 23 nights, from late March into April. I must say that we have never experienced customer service, anywhere in the world, like we did from Kenrick Mitchell. From the time we first made the enquiry in October 2011, his responses were prompt, helpful, insightful and often with a little humour in them. On arrival in Auckland he was at the airport to meet us and took his time in giving us a thorough briefing on the workings of the van and the road rules in New Zealand. Everything promised on the website was in the van, which was spotless. Despite having high mileage, the van ran faultlessly and we achieved close on 10km to the litre over the 5500km we did. Our discounted Interislander Ferry bookings done through Kenrick went without a hitch. We did experience a problem with the skylight and table locking mechanisms about two weeks into the trip, as well as the TV aerial, but it did not spoil our trip in any way. We have hired two sleeper motorhomes in Europe a number of times, from DRM, and like the extended chassis with the permanent bed, the huge amount of storage space, the permanent eating nook and swivelling front seats, as well as their sliding blinds (rather than curtains) on the windows and particularly the windscreen, which together with the swivelling front seats give an extended and practical living area at night. This style does not appear to be favoured in New Zealand and if you are used to it, you may be a little disappointed by the limited storage and living space of the two sleeper. We highly recommend New Zealand and doing it by campervan and you will not find a better and more personal service than New Zealand Frontiers.
"This was the second time we rented from New Zealand Frontiers and everything went as smoothly as our first trip."
Robert and Nancy Cox, U.S.A., March-April 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Just returned from a month long tour of the South Island in a camper van rented from New Zealand Frontiers and wanted to once again sing the praise of Kenrick Mitchell's business. This was the second time we rented from Kenrick and everything went as smoothly as before. When you rent from New Zealand Frontiers you will get the most personal service possible. If you take the time to really compare charges between rental agents you'll find that New Zealand Frontiers includes many extras in the quote that others may not. You can rent cheaper vans but they are older and more worn out and may come with problems that could ruin your trip. I think you will be very pleased with the service and how clean and maintained your camper van is when you pick it up at your selected place of delivery. We were repeat customers, enough said.
Roland Cleaver and Lenka Rybickova, U.K., April-May 2010 (received April 2012)
Kenrick Mitchell's company is genuinely second to none - all of the positive remarks and comments left by others ring so true to our own experience a couple of years back - no point to repeat them, but we do totally endorse them. We were campervan newbies when we had the good fortune to choose New Zealand Frontiers over the bigger players in the field. What a great introduction that was and what a terrific place NZ is for a campervan holiday. We've been hooked on campervanning ever since - now going on our third European outing - it's all good, but Kenrick and NZ were very tough acts to follow! If you're contemplating taking to the road, then don't think twice - you're in for a great time - and Kenrick's your man!
Jeremy Lay and Tiffany Hall, U.K., March 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We hired a camper from New Zealand Frontiers in March for the second time. Both times were great. Kenrick is really well organised and the vans were spot on. Would thoroughly recommend him!
Mark and Karen Miller, U.S.A., March 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
My husband and I rented a camper van from New Zealand Frontiers in March 2012. We highly recommend this company. The customer service was top notch. I reserved the van in October 2011 for our trip. It was very easy to communicate with the company via e-mail before our trip. Once there Mr. Mitchell delivered our camper van to our hotel. He gave us a very thorough explanation of how to operate the van and driving laws in New Zealand. He also gave us great recommendations on where to go and how much distance we could probably cover in a day. The camper van was very comfortable and well equipped. It was also easy to drive. We had a great vacation and were able to stay in many wonderful places. We highly recommend New Zealand Frontiers. The customer service we received was outstanding. The van was great. We are planning to return to New Zealand next year and we are definitely considering renting from this company again.
"You won't be disappointed."
Ed and Karen Roberts, Canada, February-March 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
The van rental was 1st rate. I hadn't driven anything larger than a car for the past 5 years, but the unit handled just like one, even on mountain roads. Everything was included-no surprises. The Kruse self guided audio tour that comes with rental was a bonus giving us ideas on what to expect when rolling into a town or region-also history and wildlife info. All in all the rental made a great experience. You won't be disappointed.
"..a very thorough explanation of the van. We were able to travel to areas that don't have a lot of accommodation for tourists."
Tiara Dillworth and Katherine Pryde, U.S.A., February-March 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Absolutely loved the campervan. It handled extremely well, had lots of storage space, and the bed was very comfortable. The van came fully stocked with everything we needed, and we managed to store plenty of stuff in all of the various cabinets. We brought way too much clothing with us, so I'd recommend not over-packing. even so, we had soft luggage, so we just stored it under the benches and only accessed it when we needed it. We had never been in a campervan before, so this was a great first experience. Once you get used to dealing with dumping the waste, filling the water, etc. it makes for a great home. We were able to travel to areas that don't have a lot of accommodation for tourists and still enjoy the area. Kenrick was great to work with, did a very thorough explanation of the van and lent us a book on hiking. The Kruse GPS storytelling device was actually really interesting and useful, and we missed having it on a later part of the trip when we rented a car. We would definitely rent with NZ Frontiers again. We felt very secure working with Kenrick and had no worries if something did happen (fortunately nothing went wrong).
Darrell and Janet Stocks, U.K., February 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
My first time in a campervan so I can't compare the various types but our Transit based van did the job. What I can say is that service is important or the need to feel that if required service response is appropriate. So no problems with NZ Frontiers campervans run by Kenrick with the personal touch. All the enquiry/booking bits went well with quick responses and good advice. Meet and greet good - would have no doubts about booking again.
"A well equipped camper - it had everything we could possibly need and then some extras."
Sarah and Bernard Bedard, Canada, February 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Just back from NZ after spending 3 weeks in a campervan from New Zealand Frontiers. Excellent service and well equipped camper, had everything we could possibly need and then some extras, GPS and Kruse GPS travel guide which made our travels even more fun by informing us of upcoming sites we would have otherwise missed. Highly recommend the company.
"The delivery and collection of the van from our hotels made life much easier. Thoroughly recommended!"
Bob and Elaine Rich, U.K., January-March 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Kenrick, the owner, could not have been more helpful. The initial orientation was very thorough. The van was immaculate, including kitchen equipment and was very well equipped, with unexpected extras such as DVDs, maps and guides. The van performed well particularly when going up the steep passes of the South Island. We were virgin 'campervaners' but soon adjusted as everything was to hand and the necessary limited storage spaces were well planned. The delivery and collection of the van from our hotels made life much easier. Thoroughly recommended!
"Excellent, personal service with quick responses to queries and questions."
Roy and Eileen Barton, U.K., January-March 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Excellent, personal service with quick responses to queries and questions. A very comfortable and well equipped van, with a very large bed. I would highly recommend this company to anyone thinking of hiring a campervan in New Zealand.
"Everything about the van was explained thoroughly and it was great to drive."
Robert and Carol Ereminowicz, U.K., January-February 2012
We used NZ Frontiers on our trip to New Zealand and found the service from Kenrick excellent. Everything about the van was explained thoroughly and it was great to drive. It gave us no problems whatsoever. The GPS guide was an added bonus. We highly recommend NZ Frontiers and have already told friends about the campervan and the fantastic service we received from Kenrick. Covered 2200 kms and used the campsites recommended in the book. Every campsite was a pleasure to stay at and the facilities were great. We will definitely use NZ Frontiers on our return to New Zealand. 10 out of 10.
"..efficient, courteous and nothing is too much trouble."
Kathleen and Peter Mepham, U.K., January-February 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We have just returned from our 6 week trip to New Zealand. From the point of view of our rental, it ran flawlessly from start to finish. Kenrick Mitchell, the owner, is efficient, courteous and nothing is too much trouble. He runs a very clean fleet of Motorhomes and is always available should anything arise. We can highly recommend this company.
"Very clean and very comfortable."
Robert and Elizabeth Rickards, U.K., January 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Excellent motor home. Constant hot water. GPS commentary. Very clean and very comfortable. Luxurious vehicle.
Al and Bev Morrison, Canada, January-February 2012 (received prior to travel)
Just a quick note before we head out to start our journey in the morning. I would like to say thank you to you for the wonderful service you have given us to date. You may know our friends have chosen another company for their van - and are already regretting their decision somewhat when we talk to them about our experiences with you. We hear things like "our van doesn't have that".. these are little things, but they are amazed that you will meet us at our hotel (and at our convenience!) - their company will not - their drop-off arrangements are complex - ours are not.. and for this peace of mind we have for us having made the right decision and the things you are doing to make our experience a positive one, we thank you! It's this "big picture" that is priceless! We are very grateful.
"We have spent another great holiday with New Zealand Frontiers - the fourth time now!!!"
Manfred Hoeffner and Christiane Werner, Germany, December 2011-January 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We have spent again a great holiday with Newzealand Frontiers - the fourth time now!!! Excellent service - fully fitted camper - hugely useful tips: nothing to complain - quite the contrary - we can really recommend this company. Again many, many thanks.
"This was a very high quality experience for my wife and I. The vehicle was spotless and well appointed when we received it, it performed very well.."
Daryl and Mary Wynne, Australia, December 2011-January 2012 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
This was a very high quality experience for my wife and I. The vehicle was spotless and well appointed when we received it, it performed very well and the special add ons of GPS navigator and touring comments for the area we were travelling through added to our enjoyment. The commercial dealings were also friendly and fair. New Zealand Frontiers have our highest recommendation.
Just a quick review to reiterate what everyone is saying on here. My boyfriend and I have just returned to England following a fabulous 4 weeks in an NZ frontiers campervan. We travelled almost 6000k without any problem. As per previous comments we appreciated the personal service that Kenrick offered. The van was immaculate and equipped with everything we needed. The only small problem we had was the fridge stopped working but this was resolved by Kenrick and due to the slight inconvenience we were refunded for half a day. We would recommend New Zealand Frontiers to anyone. The only disappointment of our holiday was England's performance in the Rugby World Cup but as wonderful as Kenrick is, even he could not have done anything about that!!!

Tony and Georgina Buckley, Ireland, September-October 2011 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
This was our first visit to New Zealand and we were on our honeymoon. The fact that everything with Kenrick and New Zealand Frontiers ran so smoothly added to an exceptional experience in New Zealand. Kenrick works hard to make it all work out so well from picking us up in Auckland to dropping us back where we wanted, service is second to none. The van was practically new and no issue with driving. It came with all the mod cons including a TV, which wasn't essential but a nice touch. Ask for the Kruse system, it's an excellent way to find out about the areas you travel through. If only Ireland had done as well at the World Cup!
Sharon Scanlon and Mark Nolan, Ireland , September-October 2011 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We went on a 7 week campervan trip to NZ for the rugby world cup. I went with NZ Frontiers as I had read good reviews on Trip Advisor and was so happy with their service. From the start Kenrick did all he could to help us have a great trip even inviting us for a cup of tea while he went through the formalities. He also spent time helping us with our route and giving us advice on places to see. When dropping us off to our cruise ship at the end of our trip he brought us on a quick detour to Mount Eden as we had missed it. My boyfriend left his Blackberry in the campervan and whilst most companies would post it or ask you to come and collect it Kenrick personally delivered it to us after we returned from our cruise. I'd highly recommend this small company who offer a great personal service over many of the larger ones.

A few days have passed after arriving safely here in Germany and we wanted to say thank you again for providing us with such a great service and a perfect motorhome during our time in New Zealand! I have to say that our expectations regarding our rental experience have definitely been exceeded. We really do appreciate your hospitality, helpfulness and reliability and your excellent and comprehensive information from the first e-mail on. I feel that we experienced a perfect motorhome vacation in paradise indeed. These days it is just awesome to share all the travel stories and tons of photos with family and friends. Your outstanding homepage (tone of writing, overall presentation, beautiful pictures) that immediately made me think that your company is the best choice, which turned out to be true. Be prepared for friends of us knocking on your door - it would be great to meet you again one day in New Zealand!

We have recently returned from a 3 week holiday in New Zealand of which we spent 19 nights in a New Zealand Frontiers motor home. Kenrick is very helpful and is only a phone call away for any help you need. The motor home itself has everything you need and is great value for money.

I have just returned from a 2 weeks holiday in North Island, New Zealand with my hubby. It was indeed a whole new adventure visiting New Zealand where we got ourselves a first time experience with a campervan ... 10 days of it! My hubby has not stopped expressing his good sense of choice for choosing a campervan from New Zealand Frontiers. Well, actually all the existing good reviews has certainly made sure of that! The friendly owner, Kenrick Mitchell was very punctual when he delivered the campervan right to the doorstep of our hotel in Takapuna. He was meticulous and thorough as he went through every detail that he personally felt would be important and useful for us from the terms and conditions of the rental to insurance clauses and the local road regulations. After briefing us on the handling and maintenance of the campervan, he even took us on a sightseeing drive around Takapuna, Mount Eden which was unfortunately closed that day and on to One Tree Hill. He was very accommodating that he went out of his way to send us to Sky Tower after we returned the campervan at our airport hotel. I would call his service first class and not forgetting, he makes a great tourist guide too! We even took up on his suggestion to drive along the Taihape Road and came out of there spellbound! If we decide to try a campervan adventure again in the South Island, we will not hesitate to knock on Kenrick's door.
"Any questions we had were answered fully and the information provided was excellent."
Andrew and Joanne Rutherford, Australia, August 2011 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Recently we had a short (10 days) trip in a New Zealand Frontiers Motorhome. Our whole experience from the time of our first inquiry was nothing short of brilliant. Even though we were hunting for the best price and chopping and changing our minds several times, Kenrick was extremely courteous in all communications with us. Any questions we had were answered fully and the information that he gave us was excellent. We spent our time in the Northland and utilized a lot of what Kenrick suggested. The motorhome was in pristine condition when we were met at the airport and the orientation we were given was thorough and comprehensive. The vehicle never missed a beat as we travelled the 1600kms and we loved the complimentary GPS and especially the Kruse commentaries. The Kruse (we called it Kenrick) gave wonderful background information on the localities that we were entering and, on quite a few occasions, we followed his suggestions to take a deviation or stop at a particular spot. All in all we couldn't fault the service or the vehicle and next time we are back we will definitely be using Kenrick and New Zealand Frontiers.

From the moment I first contacted Kenrick via email, his response was prompt, professional and very helpful - this continued throughout the dozen or so emails with me asking about 100 questions. We chose New Zealand Frontiers purely from the reviews that we had seen on this website. We really only wanted to see the South Island on our first voyage to NZ, but flew into Auckland just so we could use Kenrick's company.
Kenrick arranged all of our ferry bookings (we changed the dates on him numerous times) for us and it was smooth sailing to say the least. Nothing was ever a problem for him. The motorhome itself was 'as new'. Kenrick really takes pride in his fleet and cares about providing top notch equipment along with superior service.
Kenrick offers a very personal service. He meets you at the airport & goes through everything very thoroughly with you. Once again, I had a million questions which he patiently answered. A lot of people had told us that there wasn't much to see on the west coast and suggested going down the middle & then back up the east coast. I asked for some pointers from Kenrick & he advised us to definitely do the west coast (if you're into awesome landscapes) but make sure you work your way along the top of the island to the west coast and then head south. This was the best advice I got for the whole trip. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking (thanks Kenrick). On our arrival back in Auckland, Kenrick took us for a mini-tour of the city before dropping us at our hotel. It's things like this that really sets him apart from the others.
I absolutely do not hesitate in recommending New Zealand Frontiers. We are planning another trip in 2 years to explore the North Island and will be calling on Kenrick's services again.

My husband & I spent May 2011 travelling the North Island in a New Zealand Frontiers Motorhome. It was a great experience and we loved the freedom of being able to stay at DOC campsites if we chose. The Motorhome had gas heating as well as Air Conditioning so it was nice being warm even when we didn't have power. The Van was reliable, comfortable, easy to drive and park. The Kruse commentary (informative & timely as any we have experienced on coach tours) and Navman which were included in the rental price were extremely helpful. Even though we didn't use it, it was good to know that our toll fees were also included if needed. Kenrick's support was excellent and we wouldn't hesitate to use NZ Frontiers next time we travel to NZ.

I cannot say enough good things about New Zealand Frontiers. My wife and I have been burned by other rental agencies by hidden charges and unreasonable policies. There was NONE of that with New Zealand Frontiers. We only received a great deal and excellent service. It was refreshing to do business with such an honest person. I would recommend NZ Frontiers to anyone and everyone.

Owen Cook and Julie Williams, Australia, April-May 2011 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Being a retired 5 star hotel general manager, it is often a challenge to exceed my expectations, however that is what Kenrick delivered. The quality of the service is all in the detail and Kenrick has a finely honed sense of attention to detail which reflects in everything NZ Frontiers achieves. No guide book can fill in the gaps of Kenrick's knowledge and tips. Overall we were thoroughly delighted with our 12 days in NZ. Quality remains long after price is forgotten, so if you want that peace of mind book NZ Frontiers.

We checked Rankers.co.nz from the UK and found New Zealand Frontiers campervans were rated very highly. From initial contact right through to returning the van everything went very smoothly. Kenrick Mitchell is a mine of information about NZ as well as the vans and sites they use. We booked and paid online and met Kenrick at Auckland airport where a very thorough guide to the van was conducted as well as providing us with many travel tips. The van was in excellent condition, was diesel and had a gear shift which I preferred as my wife was to be navigator. We had booked a couple of sites in advance and would highly recommend all those that we stayed at although the drier in the laundry at the Lindale Park site near Wellington needs replacing! We stayed on a big site in Hahei, right alongside the beach - an amazing experience. We had no problems with the van. The on board toilet and shower were brilliant as were all the little bits of equipment that had been so thoughtfully provided and gave great flexibility with stops and stays. We were met in Wellington by Kenrick who gave a small guided tour of the views and sites of the capital before his long drive back to Auckland. We also recommend that you stop off at National Park Station if you are going to Whakapapa campsite or down State Highway 4. The cakes and other food are superb and the drive onwards to Wanganui down the long gorge is also a brilliant experience. We stopped often for views, an onboard cup of coffee and a sit in the sun beside the van on the chairs provided. We just could not recommend his company highly enough. The quality of the van just made our holiday so pleasant.

We had a great few weeks touring New Zealand in our van from Kenrick. He delivered the van to us at our hotel in Auckland and explained everything in detail so we knew how it all worked. He even suggested a change to our planned route so we didn?t miss out on some of the sights. When we returned the van, he dropped us off back to our hotel. Really excellent, individual service. On the drive back to Auckland Kenrick sorted out a problem a client had caused and made sure they had the problem fixed that afternoon so they could carry on and enjoy their holiday without any worries. A great, clean and tidy van from a really helpful supportive company.

We enjoyed a month long visit of the North Island in March. The best thing we did was to choose New Zealand Frontiers for our rental of a camper van. The personal touch that owner Kenrick Mitchell provided was far and above what was expected. We took delivery of a spotlessly clean van and were given a very thorough introduction of the workings of the van as well as a review of driving laws for New Zealand. We have rented many vehicles in foreign countries and have never had that happen before. This was our first trip to New Zealand and Kenrick was very helpful in suggesting places we might enjoy visiting. We were able to reach him by phone when the battery died and he made arrangements for us to have it checked out at a town nearby. Because there was a delay in getting a new battery Kenrick gave us a credit for our lost time. We just wanted to let anyone thinking of renting a camper van know that New Zealand Frontiers is the company to rent from. You won't be sorry. Bob and Nancy Cox USA

When researching camper van hire for our trip to NZ I thought the wonderful on- line reviews too good to be true. But they turn out to be spot on. From the outset Kenrick Mitchell provided much useful advice and tips on how to make the most of our trip. One of his vans became our home for two months, taking us all over North & South Islands, covering almost 8000 km without a hitch. It provided excellent accommodation for two 60-somethings needing a comfortable bed after a hard day walking. I'm sure there are other top of the range companies who can provide equally good vans, but none to match Kenrick's professionalism, attention to detail, personal service and a genuine desire to have all of his clients leave NZ feeling good about his company and his country. This man knows his business. If you are thinking of seeing NZ give it as much time as you can possibly afford and go with New Zealand Frontiers. I am confident you, like us, will have no regrets. I do not believe you could beat the service we received from New Zealand Frontiers. I am happy to report the campervan was brilliant and the personal attention we received from Kenrick made it even better. The van was really easy to drive and park. We shared the driving and covered 5330 kilometres. It had a very comfortable bed which I was not expecting. There was enough cupboard space for our holiday clothes, walking boots and waterproofs, and food shopping. Plus space under the bunks for a stash of New Zealand wines and beers to help top up the holiday spirit. Kenrick is the best thing since sliced bread, from meeting us at the airport to going through our holiday plans; nothing was too much trouble. Check it out yourself - I bet you won't be disappointed; I know I'm not!

Our decision to use New Zealand Frontiers was like a blind date! The only reason we chose them was because of their web site and the excellent responses that we got to all our bookings and enquiries. This is a prime example of a company whose C.E.O. is in touch with his audience and day to day operation and excels in his ability to deliver. We covered over 2300 kilometres in two weeks and loved every minute. The vehicle was well equipped and the GPS commentary was without doubt a major highlight. We have seldom slept as well as we did in the comfortable king size bed and vehicle handling was a dream. The rear doors were so important as we could just reverse up to the nearest view (of which there were many) and "Hey Bisto" we owned them for ourselves! Fuel consumption was very little and it was a bonus to have television and air conditioning. Definitely a ten out of ten!

My wife and I took delivery of our Ford Transit based mobile home in Auckland and toured the North and South Island of New Zealand covering over 2300 kilometres in just two weeks. Our decision to use New Zealand Frontiers was purely based on their web marketing and the amazing response that we got to all our questions and communication. Their organisation of our ferry bookings and collection details was immaculate. Thank goodness that we chose them because our experience could not have been better. The equipment was all first class and beautifully presented. The king size bed was excellent and we have not slept so well, away from home, for years. The vehicle had amazingly good road handling and power, allowing super acceleration even at low revs. This is truly a great example of a company whose owner is not only in touch with his audience but also highly professional. Definitely a 10 out of 10!

This was our first visit to New Zealand and it was made extra special by our camper van which we rented from New Zealand Frontiers. Kenrick the man behind all the hard work goes the extra mile to make sure you have an exceptional trip. If you don't it's down to yourself. Here's a list of the things that did it for me: Condition and cleanliness of the camper, good quality utensils, linen etc. Maps, GPS and general information. Confidence that if we needed help it was a phone call away and would be provided by someone who really cares (we had the camper for 29 days with not a single problem or question), a big comfortable bed. I can't recommend New Zealand Frontiers too highly. Worth every dollar.
"Worth every dollar."

We really lucked out hiring from this company. This was a fabulous holiday thanks in no small part to the quality of campervan provided and the wonderful service, help and advice which was always readily available and so freely given. When we return to New Zealand we would look no further than New Zealand Frontiers for our campervan. A first class company which we unreservedly recommend.
"..impressed by the quality of the van and the company's 24/7 availability to help and advise.. When we return to NZ we will not even consider another company."
Tom and Anne Robertson, Cyprus, January 2011 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We found our experience with NZ Frontiers to be outstanding. The initial arrangements were made without any problems and Kenrick was more than happy to answer all the questions we had about NZ. The vehicle was excellent with everything we needed and was very comfortable to sleep and move around in. The GPS tour guide was a fantastic addition and we thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the history and attractions as we drove around. We did not have any problems with the van, it ran very well and had plenty of go. My partner did find that the driving position was a little cramped but he is quite tall and it was one of the few issues we had. We would recommend NZ Frontiers to everyone as the service and vehicle were extremely good.

We had a wonderful 24 day tour of North Island, enhanced greatly by being in one of Kenrick's campervans. The comfort and cleanliness of the van were first-rate as was its performance. The service and support provided by Kenrick were great and we would heartily recommend this company for anyone seeking to tour New Zealand.

We spent great 37 days exploring both islands. Our home was one of Kenrick's camper vans. There is actually not much to add to the reviews already posted. The service is beyond expectations (we even had our camper van serviced in between due to squeaking brakes.) Everything went smoothly and easily just as you would like to have it on holidays. Well, the only thing that didn't work was Kruse audio guide, but then again we only realised on the last day, so not really a big deal. Once again, thank you Kenrick for the great service and especially for bringing our forgotten stuff to the hotel in Auckland ;-) !
Peter and Jeanie Humm, U.K., November 2010
Hi Kenrick, we had a wonderful time in your beautiful country and did not want to come home. Your hospitality was spot on and customer service unquestioned, more than could be expected. The van was perfect for our needs. We tried to look after it, as we would with some-one else's property and it looked after us. We loved every minute of our holiday.. highlights were probably Milford Sound, the masses of albatross on Otago Peninsula, lakes, mountains and waterfalls. It would be unfair to pick any one thing out. Thank you very much for making it that much better and easy for us and you never know, we may get back.

Having just returned from a wonderful holiday in New Zealand, we would like to join the ranks of those singing the praises of Kenrick and New Zealand Frontiers. His customer service was second to none and for us, he went above and beyond the call of duty. Nothing was too much trouble. Everything from handover to drop-off went without a hitch. The van was clean and tidy and everything worked just as it should. We cannot recommend this company too highly and if we return to New Zealand, we would not look anywhere else.

Excellent service, personally managed by the owner Kenrick. Pristine campervan, very well equipped. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend NZ Frontiers and we plan to use them again when we are lucky enough to visit NZ again.

We just wanted to thank you again for enabling our New Zealand holiday to be so enjoyable, by providing us with great service from NZ Frontiers. We were impressed with your timely emails and organisation prior to our trip, and during our travels were very pleased with the personal service that we received. Our holiday already seems long ago, but we are enjoying sharing our stories and photos with family and friends. We wouldn't hesitate in recommending your company to any friends thinking of doing a similar trip in the future.

We're an alto and a bass from Holland, happy to join the choir which is singing songs of praise for NZF. After dozens of these songs there's nothing really new to add here. Pickup at Auckland airport, introduction to the vehicle and 'persuading' a refusing padlock of one of our bags: Kenrick made us feel at ease from the moment we arrived. We had a wonderful 30 days on the North and South-island. The advantage of a small company became all the more apparent when we had a shattered window in one of the backdoors: impact from outside in an unsealed environment. According to Murphy's Law this happened in Mavora Lakes Park, (Lord-of-the Rings location) late Saturday afternoon, beyond any GSM-coverage. Once we reached covered surroundings we phoned Kenrick. Having arrived at a Dunedin Caravan park several hours later, we got a phone-call from Kenrick: an appointment on Sunday morning with a windshield-repair firm, 10 minutes from the camping grounds and no hassle with payment. We left the van in Christchurch airport were Kenrick awaited us, early in the morning at the drop-off in front of the departure building. Why not a 10, one may ask? It's a small penalty point for the cupboard doors against the vehicle-roof. Gas-struts keep these open once unlatched. People under 5' 8" pass without damage-risk. Taller persons (like this reviewer, 6' 2") are advised to shut immediately after taking out whatever one might need. It is not unlikely that passing Kiwi's did learn some genuine Dutch cursing now and then.... So it was very close to a 10: perfection (Rankers does not allow me to use 9,5..) Thanks to a very personal treatment by Kenrick, right from the first contact that we established, encouraged by NZF's excellent website. Don't forget to study it!
Norm and Arlene Costigan, Canada, October 2010
We rented a motorvan from New Zealand Frontiers for 10 days in Oct 2010 and really enjoyed the camping around the North Island of New Zealand. We wanted to comment that this rental company is hugely professional and Kenrick went out and beyond (even meeting us on a very early flight) in every way. He was always available to answer our questions on his cell phone and the motorvan had no problems mechanically and was clean and included everything we needed to be comfortable and secure. We want to recommend it to anyone that is looking to rent such a unit in New Zealand as with the smaller company the service was superb!! - and the cost was also less than the bigger companies so a win-win situation.
Jim and Anita Wood, U.K., September 2010 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Nearly a ten - 96% overall. Great service, van in excellent condition and with plenty of bits for comfort. Kenrick was very friendly and helpful and prepared to sort any problems. The couple of glitches were easily coped with although a thicker duvet for the cool late winter would have made it 100%. Nothing spoiled our experience of a really hospitable population - one campsite out of 19 was the exception. No hesitation in recommending the company, the vans or Kenrick. Never do it less well! All the other reviews say all that can be said, thanks Kenrick.

Mike and Sue Stinson, Canada, August-September 2010
We highly recommend New Zealand Frontiers. The personal touch which Kenrick gives sets this company apart. He personally delivered our motorhome to Christchurch, he responded immediately to our e-mail following the earthquake which occurred when we were on the South Island, and he drove us to the airport when it was time for us to leave. We were really impressed with the cleanliness and the top quality items provided with our motorhome. We had everything you could need including two kettles (one to use if you were only using propane and an electric one for when you had a power hook-up). Everything was really good quality including pots & pans, plates & cutlery and even a bodum to make coffee. During one cold, windy night on the South Island without a power hook-up, we used the propane heater throughout the night and were kept toasty warm. The GPS & Kruse commentary provided were very useful.
This was our first time using a campervan and due to Kenrick's excellent explanations and attention to detail we had no problem figuring out how to refill the water and propane and empty the other tanks. We both decided we could enjoy travelling this way for an extended period of time. Thank you Kenrick for making our short holiday in New Zealand a great beginning.
James and Emma Went, U.K., August 2010 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
Our campervan was delivered to Wellington by Kenrick himself, a day earlier than planned, due to his advice to travel early the next morning to our first destination - Napier, at no extra cost. He then proceeded with the most thorough hand-over we have ever encountered. Then off we went!! Effortless driving and campervaning for twelve days. The van itself was a powerful Transit with everything included you could possibly want at no extra cost - GPS, Kruse, heaters galore, toll payments and an amazing bed etc. Amazing! We delivered the camper back to Kenrick at Auckland after covering 1700km. He offered us tea and was genuinely interested in hearing about our travels. Unfortunately, we then had to say goodbye to our lovely camper as Kenrick drove us to the airport! An amazing experience enriched by an amazing company.

Hired a Transit Campervan from NZ Frontiers and cannot rate both the customer service and the quality of the equipment highly enough. The van was in excellent mechanical order and gave miles (- kilometres!) of trouble free travel on both sealed and unsealed roads. It was also warm and comfortable in places where the temperatures fell during the evenings - thanks to the variety of heating options. (The air conditioning was the most frequently used option.) Kenrick, the owner of the business, could not have been more helpful and accommodating - especially since hiring start and finishing dates had to be changed several times, thanks to Iceland's volcanic activities. All charges, costs etc. were completely up front and very competitive. A highly recommended set-up all round. An experience which will be repeated in the not too distant future.
Emma Roodhouse and Tobias Capwell, U.K., April 2010
We would just like to thank you so much for all the help and advice you gave us with regards the van hire. It made our holiday one of the best ever and very hard to come back to reality with work looming. England seems so small scale now after driving on some of those mountain roads around the South Island. It was good to have a day in Christchurch before departing and we really enjoyed it. We will of course post our strong recommendation that people hire from such a fab company. We really liked hiring from a smaller business and not having to blend in with the Britz or Maui's! We do hope to come back at some point although will have to save up again. Not sure if work will allow it for a while! In the meantime Toby and I wish you continued success with the business and thank you again for making it such a wonderful trip for us.

New Zealand Frontiers are an excellent choice for campervan hire if you want good quality service and advice. This was our first visit to New Zealand and also first time on a campervan holiday. So it was really important to get the right company and we were very thankful to have made the right choice in selecting New Zealand Frontiers. Before we even arrived Kenrick at NZ Frontiers was always quick in responding to emails. Then when we got to NZ he provided a thorough introduction to campervan life and advice on where to go. Our van was the perfect size for two and had everything we might need. We were very sad to say goodbye to it! But again Kenrick was more than helpful meeting us when handing over the van in a different location. It was also really good to be able to support a smaller company and meant you felt very well taken care of. Hope we can come back again soon!
Peter and Emily Bourne, U.K., March-April 2010
We would both like to thank you for taking care of us and enhancing our experiences of New Zealand prior to, during and following our rental. I am sure the quality your small operation offers far exceeds those offered by the larger companies, especially the warm welcome you gave us and taking the time to ferry us to the airport. I feel sure we will be back to New Zealand at some point in the future to visit other areas and to do the things we missed out on this time; when we do we will definitely look to rent with you again. Until then we wish you all the success with your business and getting a honeymoon yourself soon. Many thanks, Pete and Em.

I cannot recommend this company highly enough. All aspects of this company and its director Kenrick were professional and friendly from the initial communications and competitive quote, through to the cup of coffee and friendly chat when we had to sadly drop off our house on wheels. Additionally and importantly Kenrick also took the time to pick us up from our B&B in Auckland prior to rental, gave clear, helpful and thorough explanation of the spotless and unfailing camper van and its operation (which we found a number of the larger of the companies didn't bother with), and returned us to the airport at no extra cost at the end of our adventures. We hope to return and explore New Zealand further in the future and when we do we would definitely use New Zealand Frontiers.

Like a lot of the reviewers we booked with New Zealand Frontiers after doing research on other people's experience of campervans. Our experience of using New Zealand Frontiers matched the reviews. Communication before collection was great, especially as it was a while before we knew where we'd be getting the van delivered to. It was absolutely immaculate inside and out. Very easy to drive and a comfortable base for our 23 day hire. Not having used a campervan before Kenrick's assistance in showing us round the van and demystifying the various inputs and outputs gave us the confidence that we'd have no problem with the practicalities of campervan life. The Kruse commentary and GPS as standard was really good too. Would definitely hire from New Zealand Frontiers again, they provide for their excellent level of service, with a personal touch and close attention to detail - including a lift to the airport!
Paul and Margaret Roberts, U.K., February-March 2010 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We were two couples hiring two campervans and we searched the internet and found New Zealand Frontiers. This is not the first time we have rented campervans as we hired in Australia the year before. How glad we did, this is a first-class operation - no question about it. Owner Kenrick is fully committed to ensuring that you have an absolutely wonderful experience his customer service is second to none. Kenrick was very professional in the way he answers emails immediately and courteously. Then, on the day we picked up the campervan, he took the time to explain every detail concerning the vehicle and how to operate it properly and even stored our suitcases while we were on holiday for the thirty days. The campervans we rented were in mint condition - spotless and fully operational. We had one small problem with the battery but a call to Kenrick and the problem was solved. We were sad to leave it behind when our rental period expired. Thanks for everything Kenrick. We hope to be back one day!

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful month-long trip to New Zealand. We had decided to do the trip by campervan and were confronted with an overwhelming variety of choices in van styles and companies. Based on user reviews we settled on New Zealand frontiers run by Kenrick Mitchell and were thoroughly pleased with our choice. The van is just the right size for two, especially in a country with narrow curvy roads and the added challenge (for an American) of driving on the left. The economic advantage of diesel over gas was significant and we paid nothing extra for the numerous miles we travelled and were not limited to paved roads. The van itself was very comfortable and performed flawlessly throughout the trip. Two added features provided without charge that we found invaluable included a GPS unit for navigation as well as a GPS unit that gave the European and Maori history and tradition as well as the natural history of the areas we were passing through. Kenrick helped us plan the trip with suggestions about where to go and what to see and made reservations for us on the interisland ferry. When we arrived he picked us up at the airport and took us back to the airport at our departure. Had we encountered problems during our travels I am confident he would have come to our aid. We are happy to recommend New Zealand Frontiers without reservation.

We chose New Zealand Frontiers for our holiday due to the excellent reviews given on Rankers and similar sites, plus the information supplied on the great New Zealand Frontiers site. Booking a holiday on the internet and being motorhome virgins, was a daunting prospect, but the reviews were spot on and everything about New Zealand Frontiers turned out to be first class. Throughout the quoting and booking stage it was obvious that New Zealand Frontiers had a professional approach and that our point of contact, Kenrick, was very efficient, enthusiastic and above all gave personal service. The attention to detail and personal service was also much in evidence in the handover of the motorhome, which was presented in fantastic condition and with a most detailed and methodical handover. As a result we commenced our motorhome holiday with a high degree of confidence in the vehicle and with a familiarity of its operation that belied our inexperience of motorhomes. We found the Ford Transit based two berth motorhome just right from both the driving and living experience, being the right size and power for the road with ample well laid out accommodation. We had a great holiday thanks to New Zealand Frontiers aided of course by the beauty of New Zealand. However, the true worth of a company is measured when the unlikely happens and unfortunately our holiday had to be cut short due to a family bereavement at home. Managing to get through to Kenrick on a week end for his assistance when most major businesses in New Zealand are closed was very comforting. New Zealand Frontiers were very supportive in all respects. We would highly recommend New Zealand Frontiers and will definitely book with Kenrick's company again when we hope to return to see the rest of New Zealand.

After much deliberation and detailed research, my wife and I decided on renting a campervan from NZ Frontiers. Everything from the initial request for information down to the reservation was handled professionally and in a very timely manner. The campervan was delivered right to the private home we were staying at (very convenient) and Kenrick gave us a very detailed tour of all the amenities and features of the van. We were impressed with both the layout and condition of the campervan. Needless to say we ventured off and were very pleased with how the van drove and how comfortable it was. Having been in the hospitality industry in Canada for many years I am aware of good value and great service, both which were demonstrated by NZ Frontiers in glowing fashion. I would recommend Kenrick and his campervan rentals to anyone interested in a top notch experience. Thanks NZ Frontiers for making our adventure so special!

My wife and I rented one of Frontiers' camper vans this past January and we're very pleased with the experience. Everything was just as we had expected and there were no surprises. The van was clean and in excellent shape and everything worked in top order. I would highly recommend New Zealand Frontiers and we will be back to rent again.
Edwin van Birgelen, Netherlands, January-February 2010 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
After doing some research into motorhomes, I came across the New Zealand Frontiers reviews. They were all positive and ranked higher than most well-known companies, so I checked out the website. It's very informative, no nonsense information. The initial contact requesting some additional info and a personalized quote went smooth as a feather. Turned out NZ Frontiers doesn't charge the apparent BS Diesel Tax, but do include unlimited miles, a Navman and a Kruse ( - like having a personal guide with you) for free. So after receiving a very competitive quote, I decided to go ahead and rent a van for 23 days in total. The company is run as a one-man operation by the owner, Kenrick. Very likable fellow who really knows what he's doing, and loves what he's doing. Upon arriving in Auckland, he will pick you up in the van from your hotel and take you back to the depot where the van and its functions are explained to you in detail. The van itself is kept in tip-top condition (Kenrick owns a total of 6 vans, he told me this way he could keep them in great shape) and is well laid out. Everything works, and is very straightforward. The van itself is a Ford Transit and was in perfect working order. I toured both islands for over 3 weeks and the van was just perfect. It didn't flinch once. Upon returning to the depot we had a nice chat about the holiday I just enjoyed and I was debriefed on the van's performance and taken back to my Auckland hotel. Kenrick knows how to run his business and customer satisfaction is a key element in it, and it shows. Very enjoyable experience and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting beautiful New Zealand. When I go back, I'll go with NZ Frontiers, no doubt!

After much research and comparing of prices and more importantly what you got for your money, we hit upon New Zealand Frontiers. informative website, quick and detailed response and most importantly a very competitive quote. We had our van for 20 days and toured both islands with it. A highly professional service was provided by Kenrick from the initial emails, the personally delivered spotless van right to the drop off in Christchurch and calls in between. As we drove around both islands, what became apparent - apart from the stunning scenery and wildlife - was how good our van really was compared to most of the competition. One couple told us they had to request a second van from their large faceless company after the first one was brought round from the yard spewing smoke, engine spluttering it'd done so many miles. Happily Kenrick's vans are all fairly young and relatively low mileage. And because they are based on Ford Transit vans, they just keep on going! Equally because you know the owner, not just some corporate faceless company, you treat the van with more respect, driving it as your own. Above all the van was practical, had all the equipment we would ever need, drove well and provided plenty of space for both of us. The microwave and air-con in the cabin were particularly useful. We would not hesitate to use Kenrick and NZ Frontiers again. Even our native Kiwi relatives were impressed with the van, along with a number of favourable comments out on the road as well. In researching our choice, we used Rankers to find and decide on NZ Frontiers on the strength of other reports. We hope others find our thoughts useful and decide to use NZ Frontiers as well, providing they're not already booked!
"As we drove around both islands, what became apparent - apart from the stunning scenery and wildlife - was how good our van really was compared to most of the competition."
Mark and Beverley McGillycuddy, U.K., January 2010 (from independent website Rankers.co.nz)
We spent a long time researching our trip from the UK to Australia and New Zealand and Kenrick was a great help via email with our planning process, answering queries and booking sites for us. When we picked the van up it was spotlessly clean and Kenrick ensured that we, as novices to campervans, understood how everything worked before he set us on our way with instructions on how to find the supermarket (the van already had general cleaning materials and a toilet roll supplied) to stock up with provisions. Inside the van the bed was large and very comfortable and the shower surprisingly good. Storage, whilst not extensive, was OK - but we had a hard suitcase with us and there was no where to store it - we had to keep moving it around and it did get in the way a bit - the website does advise just to use soft bags - so if you can, leave the suitcase at home. I would have no hesitation in recommending New Zealand Frontiers and I would use them again.

Your vacation in paradise..
It is advisable on any visit to New Zealand to allow about 40% of time in the North Island and 60% in the South Island. Another good rule to consider is to plan on travelling a comfortable 2-300 kilometres per day - perhaps less for visits of more than eight weeks duration. Try also to allow an occasional few nights in one location to avoid having to move on every day. If you are particularly organised with your itinerary planning, creating a plan that is a little shorter than your rental duration will provide you with extra time up your sleeve with which to spend in locations you particularly enjoy or to travel to those additional points of interest you hear about along the way.
Most visitors to New Zealand are pleasantly impressed by the standard of our roads. Although you'll only find a couple of hundred kilometres of motorway in the entire country (around a handful of the major cities), all main highways are well maintained and have a 100-km/hr speed limit. There are over 100 000 kilometres of roads in New Zealand, with State Highway No1 stretching around 2000 kilometres from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island. You'll rarely be more than 50 kilometres from the next gas station, even while off the beaten track.
Tourist Information Centres are everywhere and are excellent, the locals are friendly, and there are plenty of opportunities to free-camp in peaceful locations. Along the way you'll get to practise your pronunciation of Maori place names, some of which rate among the longest anywhere in the world! Their meanings are usually either a geographical reference or tell stories of past events nearby. Although 90% of New Zealanders live within 30 minutes of the sea, the diversity of the geography means that within a short drive of the coast you can find yourself among truly alpine scenery, while a half-day's drive can easily take you through several completely different landscapes.
If you're lucky enough to be staying longer than the average three weeks' duration, the 60/40 split between islands provides enough time to consider travelling north of Auckland to visit the Bay of Islands where you'll find beautiful beaches and marine activities such as cruises, diving, deep sea fishing and swimming with dolphins, not to mention some of our nation's most important history and oldest buildings. The road through the Waipoua Kauri Forest provides one of the country's nicest drives through massive trees that are up to 1500 years old. There's a good chance of seeing our huge native wood pigeon in this area, along with the more abundant Pukeko swamp hen. You may even wish to travel all the way up to the end of the road at Cape Reinga, 400 km from Auckland, from where you can see the Tasman Sea meet the Pacific Ocean. Don't forget the Tutukaka Coast near Whangarei on the return trip southward - this stretch of quiet coastal back road passes through beautiful ocean-side communities, including the departure point for charter boat trips to the Poor Knights Islands, regarded as one of the better diving locations in the world with sea caves and wreck attractions.
Auckland is well worth spending a day checking out, with islands to visit in the beautiful Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf beyond, great views from atop the dozens of extinct volcanoes, excellent museums and more parkland than any other city in the world. Auckland also boasts enough pleasure boats to ensure that there's usually plenty to see from the seaside suburbs of more than 100 sandy beaches.
South of Auckland you'll find farmland where the grass grows up to a centimetre every day, supporting millions of cows that produce up to 50 million litres of milk daily. You may wish to consider touring the popular Coromandel Peninsular with its Pohutukawa trees and more coastal scenery. Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove are essential stops.
Rotorua is also a 'must see' centre for the presentation of our native Maori culture, as well as having abundant thermal activity that includes mud pools and geysers. You can even visit a village buried by an eruption that was heard from almost one end of the country to the other. Rotorua is a great place to get acquainted with a popular theme of New Zealand tourism - adventure! You can raft a waterfall, skydive, quad bike, mountain bike - or just play golf or sit in a hot pool.
A drive around the East Coast region gets you off the beaten track to isolated coastal settlements, among which is the village where the movie Whale Rider was filmed. Napier city in the Hawkes Bay was rebuilt in the 1930's in the Art Deco style of the period, after a tragic earthquake had destroyed the entire region. Nearby are more great opportunities to get close up to wildlife with a spectacular gannet colony.
The central North Island includes the Waitomo region with extensive cave networks and has New Zealand's largest lake - the 620 square kilometre Lake Taupo. Here you'll find geothermal activity - there are even hot springs on the lake floor - good trout fishing and excellent hiking among the three active volcanoes in the Tongariro National Park. In the winter months hiking gives way to skiing and there are Lord of the Rings movie locations throughout the region. There's great kayaking on the Whanganui River which has it's own national park, while the North Island's western Taranaki region is renown for great gardens and the almost perfect 2800 meter cone of Mt Taranaki.
The North Island's southern most point is home to our capital city of Wellington - a vibrant harbour city with a wild coastline providing wonderful drives, historic government buildings and a world-class national museum to visit.
Although Cook Strait, which separates our two main islands, is only 23 kilometres across at it's narrowest point, the ferry trip from Wellington to Picton is a 100-kilometer cruise, of which only half is in open waters.
New Zealand's South Island covers about 150 000 square kilometres - almost 60% of the nation's total land area, but has barely 25% of our four million population. The South Island has a rugged backbone created by the meeting of two of the earth's great tectonic plates, forming a long range of mountains rising to over 3000 meters. Roads only pass through the Southern Alps along three spectacular routes, resulting in many visitors choosing to travel down the West Coast and back up the eastern side of the island. Traffic is lighter than in the North Island and gas stations can be further apart.
The top of the South Island has two separate regions worth considering - Marlborough with it's inviting wineries, and the Nelson region with its fruit growing and the Abel Tasman National Park, a popular destination for sea kayaking. Nearby is the half million-hectare Kahurangi National Park, while inland is the tranquil Nelson Lakes National Park.
The West Coast region is wild, isolated and beautifully forested with ancient native pine varieties and nikau palms growing on slopes which rise steeply from the sea to snow capped mountains. Industry here is based around farming, fishing and coal. There are few towns but plenty of history from a wealthier gold mining era. Just south of Greymouth you can travel inland and eventually across to Christchurch via the Arthur's Pass, following the same route as the Trans Alpine rail journey. Alternatively, a more popular itinerary continues southward to include the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers that are very accessible and offer guided glacier walks and flight-seeing opportunities. You should be able to get a photo of our alpine parrot - the kea - while you're there too. Travelling this way, you will turn inland about half way down the west coast of the island, driving over the Haast Pass into the Central Otago region.
You'll need at least a few days here to linger in quaint picture book villages like Arrowtown and the lakeside alpine resorts of Wanaka and Queenstown. The list of activities here is endless... though you'll probably have trouble raising yourself from just gazing at the views! You can visit more wineries, raft or take a jet boat ride on a white water river, take a lake cruise, jump off a bridge with a rubber band attached to your legs, go for a flight in a collection of historic fighter planes, take a lakeside stroll, a gondola up a mountainside, or just relax and wish you could stay forever!
From Queenstown another essential inclusion in your travels is to drive onward to Te Anau. Here you can see some of the world's rarest bird species, including the takahe alpine hen. The most famous of our hiking trails also departs nearby to spend three days passing through a tiny corner of the huge Fiordland National Park en route to Milford Sound. An easier way of getting to Milford Sound is by the 120-kilometer avalanche swept road from Te Anau. Don't forget to take a cruise and a helicopter ride while you're there. Doubtful Sound is an even larger fiord with a 500 kilometre coastline which is also well worth visiting from your base in Te Anau.
The South Island's southern-most Southland region is also worth a lingering drive, with State Highway No1 passing through Invercargill before terminating at Bluff, from where you might like to consider taking the ferry across to Stewart Island if time permits. Stewart Island is the only place in New Zealand where our most famous native bird, the flightless kiwi, is not strictly nocturnal - providing great day-time viewing opportunities. The Catlins coastal district is a popular meandering diversion down in these latitudes, where you're more than half way from the equator to the South Pole.
Our fourth largest city of Dunedin gets snow to sea level in the winter, so it's not surprising that you can visit penguin and albatross colonies on the city's Otago Peninsular. There's a strong Scottish heritage to discover as well, whiskey, kilts and a castle included. Continuing northward, the town of Oamaru has a remarkable heritage preserved in stone architecture.
From here you can deviate inland to the Alps again to visit Mt Cook, our highest peak and one of dozens to rise to over 3000 metres within its surrounding national park. There are more great flight-seeing options here and at the nearby lakeside settlement of Tekapo, which boasts the well-photographed Church of the Good Shepherd.
Back down on the coast is the most English of our major cities, Christchurch. As well as being a cathedral town gifted with parks and museums, in Christchurch you can even go punting on the Avon or take a tram ride through the city centre. The historic Banks Peninsular town of Akaroa is especially picturesque while in this area and has a French history that is unique in New Zealand. Don't miss a stop in the once sleepy fishing village of Kaikoura, north of Christchurch, where close ocean currents provide great feeding for whales, with whale watching now a bigger industry than the lobster fishing.
Naturally it's not possible to provide a full guidebook to activities here and, besides, as you've chosen a motorhome vacation you're probably inspired by the independence of making your own discoveries along the way! Rather than issuing daily route plan options New Zealand Frontiers prefers to leave the spirit of discovery with you to tailor an itinerary or simply to wander freely around localities that meet your interests or attract your curiosity. However, this advice should serve to provide you with an overview of the popular inclusions on any tour of New Zealand - a base from which to launch your plans and possible further research. Once here and on the road, you will find that local i-sites (information centres) are full of friendly, helpful staff who are very knowledgeable and can provide comprehensive advice on local attractions, ensuring you wont miss anything!
To continue with more detailed pre trip planning, or should you still feel that you prefer the security of having a fixed itinerary provided for you, New Zealand Frontiers highly recommends visiting the government operated New Zealand.com website where you will find a comprehensive range of further information from extensive details on each region and activities offered to a selection of touring routes.

Great deals on safe havens..
New Zealand has over 300 holiday parks and campgrounds offering safe, friendly accommodation with full facilities, electricity equipped sites and very reasonable fees. Additionally the Department of Conservation (DOC) provides facilities for motorhomes at a modest cost in many scenic locations throughout the country. Free-camping is also permited in most regions.
Motorhome parks in New Zealand are generally open year round, with most providing full kitchen, bathroom, laundry and waste dump facilities. Many can boast spectacular locations such as beside beaches, at thermal springs, next to national parks, beside rivers and lakes, and in metropolitan centres. Reservations are not necessary except during the local peak summer holiday period from Christmas until mid January when it is recommended to call ahead, especially if you anticipate arriving late.
Holiday Accommodation Parks of New Zealand
As an umbrella organisation, HAPNZ is the national motorhome park association in New Zealand with approximately 300 member properties. Beneath the HAPNZ umbrella are three major chains of holiday parks; Family Parks of New Zealand, Kiwi Parks and Top 10. Regular users of holiday parks - such as those on a motorhome vacation - have the option of joining loyalty programs upon arrival that offer discounted access to all properties within the chain for a membership fee of approximately $NZD40. As no single holiday park chain achieves representation in every location you are likely to visit during your travels, your New Zealand Frontiers rental package includes a guide to the locations and contact details for all HAPNZ parks.

Department of Conservation Campsites

Many are found in the types of scenic natural settings which New Zealand is renowned for - from lush forest to lake shores and sandy or pebbled beaches to alpine locations.
Conservation campsites are generally basic with facilities ranging from informal sites with very simple facilities such as pit toilets and stream water to a few well serviced grounds with a camp warden, hot showers, lighting and rubbish collection. Fees are from $NZD3 to $NZD14 per person.

Free camping and parking for a coffee break
One of the wonderful benefits available to those who choose to travel by motorhome is the freedom to stop at your leisure. You will find opportunities to park up with an alpine vista outside your kitchen window or the beach outside your bedroom door!
You only need use common sense when choosing a place to stop for a few hours:
For your comfort you will want to find a place which is flat and level and which is quiet. Respect the local people and do not park in front of houses or where you might annoy others by spoiling their view.
Free camping and overnight parking on public land and in rest areas maintained by local authorities is also permitted in many areas around New Zealand - but involves further considerations. In recent years the use of motorhomes has become very popular in New Zealand and most City, District and Regional Councils have responded to environmental responsibilities, safety considerations and commercial interest concerns, along with the general dilemma of increasing numbers of motorhomes parking overnight by creating policies on the topic. Unfortunately such laws are established on a region by region basis and vary from general prohibition to active encouragement. Should you anticipate engaging in freedom camping you are advised to seek the local regulations from the nearest information centre. Always check for and obey signs which forbid camping. You must obey any enforcement officers. Do not park next to a campground. You may not be able to stay in national parks or on popular lakefronts or harbour-sides, but there will usually be another place just as beautiful not far down the road.
You can help to reduce the need for such new laws by always being courteous to locals, thoughtful about where you park, and never leaving anything behind when you leave. "Take only photographs and leave only footprints" Never dump your grey or black water anywhere other than at a proper dump site and always take your rubbish with you.
Campgrounds and holiday parks offer many benefits and most people who free-camp still pay to use campgrounds frequently for the laundries, dump sites, water sources and other facilities they offer travellers.
Freedom Camping Motto: "Assume nothing - always ask a local"
New Zealand is proud of its 100% Pure image. In recognition of the responsibility for maintaining this image, exercising guardianship and promoting common, clear advice to those wishing to experience the privilege of freedom camping in such a widely admired land, The Tourism Industry Association of New Zealand along with a wide range of other interested organisations has established the New Zealand Freedom Camping Forum to provide advice and promote responsibility among freedom campers. New Zealand Frontiers supports the values of the Freedom Camping Forum. New Zealand Frontiers only operates fully self contained motorhomes and encourages all clients considering freedom camping to visit the website of the Freedom Camping Forum and adhere to the motto 'Assume nothing - always ask a local'

A scenic cruise to break your travels..
If your New Zealand vacation includes checking out both the North and South Islands, your trip will include more than just travelling by road - you'll be taking a 100 kilometre ferry journey across the Cook Strait that separates the two islands as well.
New Zealand Frontiers is an accredited agent for the Interislander ferry company, who operate up to six daily departures each way between Wellington, on the bottom of the North Island, and Picton at the top of the South Island. Should your intended itinerary require ferry travel, reservations can be secured to meet your requirements at a cost of $NZD340 each way - fully transferable (without amendment fees or penalty but subject to availability) and representing a 10% saving on normal full fare rates.
If your travel plans do not include a fixed date for crossing between the islands, or should the flexibility just suit you better, you can also make your own reservations directly with the Interislander using a free phone number during your travels, right up to the day of departure.
However, to ensure travelling on first choice dates and at preferred times, it is recommended that you secure ferry bookings as early as possible, especially during the peak travel season of December to February when fares cost as much as $NZD380 each way.
Vehicle check in time is one hour before your sailing. The Navman multilingual GPS navigation systems supplied with all New Zealand Frontiers rentals can easily be set to take you directly to the ferry terminals - and the terminals are also well signposted from Wellington's motorway and in the idyllic town of Picton. While the closest points between the North and South Islands are only 23km apart, your total ferry journey covers 96km. Crossings take approximately 3 hours. Only half of the route is in Cook Strait, with the remaining time spent in the Marlborough Sounds and Wellington Harbour. Make sure you take your camera with you upon parking on-board as the scenery is picturesque. Views en-route range from Wellington's skyline to distant mountain ranges and deep, forested fiords. You'll even pass through an area with eight-knot tidal currents. The Interislandline's ships are very comfortable, carrying up to 1600 passengers each. The vessels have bars, cafes, great viewing decks, and as well as carrying your motorhome you may see trains and trucks on board.
Due to the expense of retrieving vehicles, New Zealand Frontiers do not accept rentals that require vehicle drop off in one port and pick up in the other.

Pack a sunhat and raincoat and you'll be right!..
New Zealand has a mild, temperate climate with few weather extremes where living without air conditioning is comfortable and it is possible to farm animals outdoor year round. Our islands lie remotely in the South Pacific Ocean, with 95% of the population living within half an hour's drive from the sea.
Few areas are more than 100km from the coast. This means we experience the usual changeability of a maritime climate and it is worth noting in your clothing preparations that relatively high humidity can result in small temperature changes being quite noticeable. As locals we're accustomed to the cheerful philosophy that, when outdoors, if you carry a sunhat and a raincoat you should be OK. Statistically, it is likely that you will encounter at least one wet day during visits of a week or more at any time of the year. However, it is also quite possible to experience several weeks with or without rain at any time of the year! While it is advisable to bring clothing for all seasons during any visit you can generally expect the best weather during our summer months of December to March and, in most areas, wetter weather during the June to Aug / Sept winter months. One of the advantages of choosing to travel by campervan is that inconvenience is minimized during any rainfall.
Our weather arrives from the Tasman Sea to our west, so the west coast is wetter than the east. Some southern stretches of the west coast receive phenomenal rainfall (up to 12m annually) and are positively spectacular if you visit during a rainstorm. In contrast, inland regions of the south/central South Island are the only areas in the country blessed by a continental climate, where months can pass without precipitation and our temperature extremes of -22 to +42 degrees have been recorded. In the North Island by summer you can expect temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees and up to 30 on warm days. By winter 12 to 17 degrees is usual, less during cooler periods, with occasional overnight frosts. In the South Island expect similar summertime temperatures, with warm days rising into the 30's. During winter the South Island is about five degrees cooler than the North, with snow occasionally providing a pretty picture to low altitudes and even sea level. Overnight temperatures often drop below freezing with some areas receiving as many as 150 frosts per year, making for brilliant crisp, clear days.
Ocean temperatures range from 22 degrees during the northern summer months to eight degrees during winter in the south.
Summer months bring the spectacle of coastal native Pohutukawa trees in brilliant crimson blossom, harbors full of yachts and generally stable weather ideal for outdoor activities. This results in the October / November until February / March period being the most popular time to visit, with the locals also on holiday over Christmas and throughout January.
Autumn brings quieter times and often continuing good weather, with some areas presenting an artist's palette of colour. Winter can also bring good weather, especially in the south, and usually provides good skiing on uncrowded slopes. Springtime's millions of bouncing lambs in fields where the grass grows up to a centimeter daily are guaranteed to provide a smile, and gardens radiate the glow of nature which makes our land so special.
