12 Volt Power Supply
Do all the motorhomes have a 12 volt power supply outlet?

Yes. All New Zealand Frontiers vehicles are fitted with cigarette lighter type power outlets in the dash. There is plenty of space nearby to place items such as mobile phones while they recharge. The sockets are also within easy reach of the bench top in the living area. 240 volt outlets are provided in the living area (along with a universal plug adapter), though these require connection of the vehicle to the mains power supply to operate.

Additional Drivers
Will we have to pay extra to have more than one authorised driver?

No. New Zealand Frontiers does not charge extra for additional drivers. Please note that drivers are only covered by insurance if they are listed on the rental contract. Because it costs nothing to be listed, we recommend that you list the names of all licenced drivers on the contract at the time of receiving your motorhome - even if you don't intend driving. This will ensure that you receive insurance cover should decide to share the driving during your travels - once you have discovered just how relaxing our roads are!

Air Conditioning
Are the motorhomes equipped with air conditioning?

All New Zealand Frontiers motorhomes are equipped with 240 volt air-conditioning systems, ensuring that you remain fresh and condensation-free during stays in motorhome parks. While the vehicles are not fitted with in-dash air-conditioning, the climate in New Zealand is particularly mild with no extremes of heat or cold. You should find the efficient ventilation system fitted to all motorhomes in the fleet ensures comfortable travel at any time of the year.

Babies, Infants, Children
Can we sleep an extra person in our motorhome?

New Zealand regulations require that all passengers must be seated and wearing seat belts while driving. Unfortunately the Ford Transit two berth model motorhome only has provisions for seat belts on the two front seats. As a transport service licence holder, New Zealand Frontiers has both a legal and a moral obligation to ensure that all safety requirements are met and cannot therefore accept rentals of two berth vehicles where the client intends carrying three persons. Which means you'll have to leave the kids at home!

BBQ's
Does New Zealand Frontiers offer BBQ hire?

New Zealand Frontiers does not offer BBQ's with its motorhomes. This is because on board storage considerations would result in a significant compromise of luggage space available. However, you will be pleased to learn that the gas stove which New Zealand Frontiers motorhomes are equipped with is similar in design to a BBQ and located where it can be open to the outside of the vehicle on a sunny day! Furthermore, many of the holiday parks recommended by New Zealand Frontiers have BBQ's available for guest use free of charge.

Beds
How big are the beds?

Big! (and comfortable!) At 1.95 x 1.73m , the beds are not only the largest available in any motorhome model offered in New Zealand - they are also so comfortable you'll actually find yourself looking forward to climbing under the queen sized duvet at the end of each day?s adventures. Bedding provided ensures you remain very cosy, even during winter-time wanderings. Although the sleeping arrangements offer the option of one double or two single bed layouts, most clients find that even when travelling with someone they are not accustomed to sharing a bed with, the huge size of the double provides an uninterrupted night's sleep.

Bicycles
Does New Zealand Frontiers offer bike hire?

Unfortunately the Ford Transit model motorhome operated by New Zealand Frontiers is not suited to carrying bicycles. This is because the rear doors of the vehicle - where the bikes would be carried - provide one of the main entries to the living area. Naturally carrying bikes inside would cause considerable inconvenience. However, you can be assured that there are many opportunities to day hire bikes throughout New Zealand. You may well find that occasional day hire expenses would cost you less than the hire charge you would incur to take bicycles with you for the full term of your motorhome rental - and you get to choose the sunny days! Bikes can typically be obtained from some hotels, bike shops, or bicycle rental operators on lake and waterfronts. Bike rental operators can also be found at most mountain bike parks - these often have over 50 kilometers of purpose built challenge trails.

Rental costs range from $NZD 10 for two hours from a hotel to $NZD 35 for two hours at a mountain bike park.

Breakdowns
What happens if I have a breakdown?

Easy. New Zealand Frontiers gives you the peace of mind of a nationwide roadside assistance program in the unlikely event that you encounter problems. This is accessible via a quick free phone call from anywhere in New Zealand. The time taken to reach you will depend on your location, but could vary from less than 30 minutes in cities to a couple of hours in remote areas. It is New Zealand Frontiers policy to attempt to get you back on the road just as quickly as possible. However, again, in the unlikely case of a vehicle replacement being necessary and where fault lies with us, a full refund of any time lost would be offered to you.

It is important to remember that, where mechanical objects are involved, even new vehicles can have occasional systems failures. Despite this, it is the experience of New Zealand Frontiers that only a small percentage of rentals encounter problems and, furthermore, that the majority of all problems are minor and can be attended to at your convenience later in your travels.

You can be assured that all New Zealand Frontiers motorhomes are mechanically inspected and serviced every 15 000 km to standards greater than is required by the manufacturer. Additionally, independent safety inspections by government agencies are required every six months. As a result of these strict mainenance schedules, New Zealand Frontiers enjoys an enviable reputation for ensuring vacations run smoothly, with a roadside breakdown rate of less than one per 250 000km (that's less than one in 70 rentals)

CD Players
Are the motorhomes equipped with CD players?

Yes. All New Zealand Frontiers motorhomes are equipped with radio/CD player sound systems with four speakers. Bringing some of your favourite sounds with you from home is a recomended travel tip that enhances travel in foriegn lands. But don't forget to check out some of our home-grown musical talent while you're here!

Christchurch to Auckland
Can I save money by requesting a Christchurch to Auckland rental?

Clients often enquire whether they can save money on a Christchurch to Auckland rental. Unfortunately vehicles are usually required for further rentals from Auckland upon drop off in Christchurch. This results in arrangements being made to return all motorhomes to Auckland immediately after each one way rental terminates - meaning that availability from Christchurch is poor. As it is usually necessary to deliver a vehicle to Christchurch for the occasional request of a rental from there, the $NZD875 relocation fee normally applies to rentals commencing in Christchurch.

Diesel Costs
Can I find out the cost of diesel in New Zealand?

Yes. So far in 2013 the price of diesel has varied from $NZD1.45 to 1.70 per litre. Fuel costs in New Zealand change frequently. The cost also varies considerably from cities to remote rural areas, and many larger supermarkets offer discount vouchers with your receipt at the checkout counter. The difference between the cheapest and most expensive prices nationwide on a single day can be as high as 35%. Currently (Aug 2013) the price is typically $NZD1.50 in well travelled areas, rising in rural areas.

Your New Zealand Frontiers motorhome travels approximately 10 kilometers per litre.

Diesel Recovery Tax
Will I have to pay any diesel recovery tax?

No. Some rental motorhome operators in New Zealand charge a 'Diesel Recovery Tax' This is actually a misrepresentation of another tax called the Road User Charge (RUC). All taxes on diesel fuel are paid at the pump, at the time of purchasing the diesel and anyone claiming to charge you additional diesel taxes is doing so dishonestly. New Zealand Frontiers is not charged a 'Diesel Recovery Tax' by the government or any other authority - because there is no such tax.

It is common to receive conflicting advice from rental vehicle operators in New Zealand on the subject of 'Diesel Recovery Tax' The collection of this additional fee by many companies upon vehicle return is a source of frequent disatisfaction among visitors to New Zealand. You will certainly find no such tax listed on the website of the New Zealand Inland Revenue Department.

Tax applied to diesel sales in New Zealand is considerably less than the government's taxation of petrol. This results in the pump price of diesel being significantly cheaper than petrol in New Zealand. Naturally some of the tax collected from fuel sales is used to pay for roads. Because diesel powered vehicles contribute proportionately less towards road construction and maintenance through fuel tax, their contribution is collected additionally through RUC's. The Road User Charge is levied not only on all diesel vehicles, but also on heavy petrol vehicles and even on vehicles with no engine such as heavy trailers. It is not a diesel recovery tax or any other type of fuel tax and is charged differently for each vehicle, according to the vehicle's impact on the road. Some companies pass this operating expense on to clients as a false 'Diesel Recovery Tax'. New Zealand Frontiers (and many other rental vehicle operators) do not impose extra charges on clients to recover this expense, just as we would not add on separate charges for any other business expense such as tyre wear or vehicle safety inspections.

You can be assured that, with New Zealand Frontiers, the daily rental rate covers all your use of the vehicle (subject to any additional expenses you choose such as the zero excess insurance plan or the cost of recovering your vehicle if you leave it elsewhere from Auckland) Caution is advised towards other companies charging extra fees for the same service. And any company charging you a diesel recovery tax will not be passing it on to the government - because there is no such tax to pay.

As with all insurance arrangements, you can void your insurance cover. Full details of insurance obligations are included in your rental contract which is explained to you when you take delivery of the vehicle.

Because of the possibility of voiding your insurance, a $NZD 2500 bond in the form of an un-deposited credit card sales voucher is taken at the time of pick up of your vehicle.

Mobile Phones
Can I rent a mobile phone or a SIM card for my own phone?

Yes. Mobile phones and SIM cards are available for rental direct from both Telecom and Vodafone at Auckland Airport. Both companies operate conveniently located shops in the arrivals hall. You may wish to enquire with your mobile phone provider in your home country regarding the compatibility of your phone with New Zealand systems as, in some cases, you can simply bring your phone with you from home, turn it on upon arrival, and use it as you would at home. (Note that it is always a good idea to check with your phone company whether any additional charges will apply if you use your phone while abroad). In other cases, you may only need to rent a local SIM card for your existing phone. Whether you rent from Vodafone or Telecom will depend on the network your phone operates on - staff in the stores can advise you on which tune your phone sings to.

Costs (Aug 2013):
Costs vary widely according to the plan you choose. As one of our former Telecom executives once famously said - pricing plans are designed to ensure the customer remains confused! As a guide, at Telecom SIM card purchase will generally cost around $NZD5, and a $NZD25 plan will currently provide 100 minutes of calling time within New Zealand and 500MB of data (with a $NZD75 plan providing 3GB of data). At Vodafone a $NZD30 SIM card purchase provides 250MB of data and $NZD20 of national calls at $NZD0.49 per minute, after which a $NZD40 'top up' would provide another 1GB of data.

One Way Rentals
Is there a charge for one way rentals?

Yes. New Zealand is a country that is best seen from North to South. (Auckland to Christchurch) It is typical to allow approximately 40/60% of your time in each island respectively. While most clients choose to start their vacation in Auckland, even those who travel right to the bottom of the South Island usually eventually find themselves back in Auckland - without ever having travelled the same roads twice! If you are planning a visit of more than three weeks duration, New Zealand Frontiers recommends considering a round trip itinerary. However, should you not have the luxury of such a liesurely period, one-way intineraries are perfectly acceptable. New Zealand Frontiers maintains a policy of charging clients the additional expenses incurred to return their vehicle to Auckland at the end of one-way rentals - this will be included (and clearly indicated) in your quote where applicable. You can request a quote for any suitable one-way itinerary. Charges for commonly requested one-way itineraries are (Aug 2013):

AKL - Christchurch: add $NZD 875
AKL - Queenstown: add $NZD 1075
AKL - Wellington: add $NZD 425

Pets
Can we bring our cat, dog, canary, python or Komodo dragon with us?

As a country which is heavily dependent on primary industries, New Zealand's border authorities are very strict when enforcing laws forbiding the unlicensed importation of animals. Consequently your treasured poochy, moggy or slippery snake would undoubtedly find itself sentenced to compulsory confinement at a secure holiday resort upon arrival, with the room rate likely to considerably exceed those charged by the Hilton. New Zealand Frontiers also maintains its own policy of not permitting pets in its rental vehicles. While this is not an area which is specifically covered by New Zealand legislation, considerations regarding the presence of cooking equipment in a relatively confined space and respect of the general public expectation regarding pets in rental vehicles has influenced New Zealand Frontiers policy on this matter.

Smoking
Are the motorhomes non-smoking?

Toll Roads

Does New Zealand have toll roads and how do I pay for them?

Yes and No! Toll roads in New Zealand are fully automated and operate by camera recognition of the licence plate, with billing direct to the registered owner of the vehicle. Toll roads are very uncommon in New Zealand and, with New Zealand Frontiers, you will not need to worry about additional charges upon return of your vehicle should you encounter any toll roads during your travels - they're included in your daily rental rate.

^ Back/Top

TV's
Do the motorhomes have TV fitted?

Yes. All New Zealand Frontiers motorhomes are equipped with TV and DVD players - great for checking out your downloaded photos and footage of that bungy jump. However, please note that the relatively small size of vehicle aerials and remoteness of many areas of New Zealand results in often poor or non-existent TV signal reception. For your reassurance, 80% of clients report having been too busy having a holiday to have even considered watching TV. And should you be anticipating a military coup back home, all holiday parks in New Zealand have TVs connected to standard aerials on which you can monitor progress.

^ Back/Top

Waste Charges
Is there a cost to empty waste?

No. New Zealand Frontiers motorhomes are equipped with two waste tanks - an 80 litre one for 'grey' water from the sink and shower, and a 20 litre 'black' water cassette for toilet waste. Both are clean and easy to empty, with free dump sites located at all motorhome parks as well as some gas stations and occasionally at public sites provided by local authorities. How often you will need to empty the tanks varies widely according to personal factors such as how often you use facilities provided at the motorhomes parks etc.
